A shock absorber is a sealed
cylinder filled with hydraulic fluid with a plunger/piston
inside. It stabilizes or dampens the up and down
bouncing of the springs. Shock absorbers work
only when a car bounces. At rest they have no
function.
Although how and where you drive plays a large
part, new shocks are generally needed after 20,000
kilometers.
